For the past 4 months I’ve been producing an album with 24 independent Australian artists, featuring their original acoustic music. The album is called “A Quiet Word” and showcases the grass-roots scene I’m surrounded by in this amazing city.

The album was also filmed, so there is a few video clips up on YouTube that shows you the artists in all their glory. The album is being sold with profits going to The Starlight Foundation, which is an organization here in Australia that helps seriously ill kids. Here are a couple of the clips from the video shoot…

We’ve reached the end of another big year, although for Close to Nowhere things are just starting to happen. I sudden increase in listenership and artist submissions absolutely blew me away this last month! So I say bring it on 2012! It’s gonna be a huge year! I’ll be back with all new shows and a heap of exciting new artists in a couple of weeks. But don’t fret, I’ve pulled together a few treats for this show, here are some new artists to Close to Nowhere:

MOLLY CONTOGEORGE

Molly is a real find. She hails from Sydney and has been surrounded by music her entire life. With both parents being musical, and a passion for singing and song-writing, Molly has crafted a sound that seems to be made just for her, a very unique blend of style and expression that is such a rarity these days. You can get more info on Molly right here:

http://www.facebook.com/mollycontogeorgemusic

ERICA OWNS THE SKY

Erica owns the Sky are a new and exciting rock band from Darwin. They have a great vibe and really seem to have their genre perfected. The energy that comes across in their recordings is probably only a tenth of what they can do live, so I think these guys have a very promising career ahead of them. Here’s a link to their world:

http://www.facebook.com/ericaownsthesky

ROSS GIPSON

Ross is a very interesting artist. Even though the music is very lively and builds to great climaxes, I can’t help but feel that there’s a sense of minimalism to the work, which is such a refreshing thing to come across in an artist. This music speaks for itself, and will take you quite by surprise when you’ve heard quite a few of the songs, which seem to all be telling the same sonic story – it’s so difficult to explain which makes it all the more interesting and exciting. Check out more here:

http://www.reverbnation.com/rossgipson

HOT ENGLISH

Hot English are f#$%ing awesome! This is a band that slaps you in the face and says “Pay attention!”, but in the nicest possible way. You can’t help but get drawn into their music and it is a treat to hear such an established band (even thought they are relatively new) deliver some really top quality song-writing and performance. Just a treat, a real treat and I’m glad they found their way to Close to Nowhere. Here’s more on the band:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hot-English/215716445164358?sk=app_178091127385

Playlist:

1. Rekki Ro 2 – Mis Divine
2. The Deadly Winter – The Deadly Winters
3. Paper sails – Stu Larsen
4. Ninjas and elephants – Hot English
5. Get there, get there – The Long March
6. A golden glove humility – Minute 36
11. Mamo longan – Ross Gipson
12. Touch the Ground – The Renzullo Project

That’s it for the year, thanks so much for listening and being part of Close to Nowhere. I’ll see you all in the new year.

<itunes:summary>We've reached the end of another big year, although for Close to Nowhere things are just starting to happen. I sudden increase in listenership and artist submissions absolutely blew me away this last month! So I say bring it on 2012! It's gonna be a huge year! I'll be back with all new shows and a heap of exciting new artists in a couple of weeks. But don't fret, I've pulled together a few treats for this show, here are some new artists to Close to Nowhere:

Here's a link to their world:

http://www.facebook.com/ericaownsthesky

ROSS GIPSON

Ross is a very interesting artist. Even though the music is very lively and builds to great climaxes, I can't help but feel that there's a sense of minimalism to the work, which is such a refreshing thing to come across in an artist. This music speaks for itself, and will take you quite by surprise when you've heard quite a few of the songs, which seem to all be telling the same sonic story - it's so difficult to explain which makes it all the more interesting and exciting. Check out more here:

http://www.reverbnation.com/rossgipson

HOT ENGLISH

Hot English are f#$%ing awesome! This is a band that slaps you in the face and says "Pay attention!", but in the nicest possible way. You can't help but get drawn into their music and it is a treat to hear such an established band (even thought they are relatively new) deliver some really top quality song-writing and performance. Just a treat, a real treat and I'm glad they found their way to Close to Nowhere. Here's more on the band:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hot-English/215716445164358?sk=app_178091127385

Playlist:

1. Rekki Ro 2 - Mis Divine
2. The Deadly Winter - The Deadly Winters
3. Paper sails - Stu Larsen
4. Ninjas and elephants - Hot English
5. Get there, get there - The Long March
6. A golden glove humility - Minute 36
7. Swing (Live) - Terri Marie
8. Loaded gun - Erica owns the sky
9. Lead on, lead on - Molly Contogeorge
10. Skylight pt.1 - Elenor Lupretz
11. Mamo longan - Ross Gipson
12. Touch the Ground - The Renzullo Project

That's it for the year, thanks so much for listening and being part of Close to Nowhere. I'll see you all in the new year.

Well it’s the second last show for 2011 – Sad times. But not to worry, there are heaps of new artists featured in this week’s show, and it’s probably the MOST diverse show I’ve ever put together – from gentle piano music, through to Hip Hop, through to Metal! It’s certainly a bumpy ride, but a damn good one!

GEORGIA RAY

Georgia Ray is a fantastic new artist to come to my show. She’s got a very honest method to her song-writing, and her delivery is raw and beautiful. You can check out her music right here:

http://triplejunearthed.com.au/georgiaray

STEVE WATSON

Steve Watson is raw. He delivers a very gritty, interesting mix of sounds that tell a story. He doesn’t need masses of production or a raging band behind him to get his message across. A real story-teller, which is something of a rarity in the music scene these days. You can get his music right here:

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/the-grass-is-greener-where/id416050564

POINT BLANK

Point Blank are one of those bands that when you first hear them you just seem to know exactly what they’re all about. Their style is such that you know exactly what you’re in for from just the first few bars. One word – Catchy. Here’s some links to their world:

http://pointblankaustralia.bandcamp.com/

http://www.youtube.com/POINTBLANKaustralia

PALORUS JACK

These guys ooze “Cool”. I haven’t come across many like them, and for some reason I feel like I’ve heard their music for years. It’s the mark of a good band, to be able to come across as being fully developed with their style and presence, as if they’ve exsisted for decades. They own their space, and as the listeners, we know it. Here’s a couple of links to their stuff:

http://www.myspace.com/palorusjack

http://www.youtube.com/user/jackpalorus

THE SIMON WRIGHT BAND

Groove masters. This is such a cool band. The vocals really shine in this outfit, and the grooves they get are just so punchy and tight you can’t help but move to it. There’s a lot of soul in this sound, and I don’t mean the gospel type. The way the songs are structured just makes it feel like the words existed before the song, such an organic feel to it. His debut album is due for release early 2012.

JESSICA PAIGE

Jessica is one of those artists that just draws you in from bar one. Painfully beautiful is the best way I can describe her music, and her voice just guides you through her stories effortlessly. Such a rare find.

http://www.jessicapaige.com/fr_newalbum.cfm

MICHAEL BIANCHINO

Michael is another new artist to the show and a very welcome one at that. He’s developed a unique sound to his music and brings a refreshing new life to his genre. He’s a new comer to the scene so it’s a privelage to welcome him to the world of radio. Here’s a link to his fanpage:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Bianchino-Creatures-of-Goya/162842825777

CRUDE BASTARD

Firstly, apologies for saying the wrong name on the show for this band – I called them Cruel Bastard, but they are in fact the very impressive “Crude Bastard”! These guys are from Chile, and are HEAVY. Very driving sound from a band that know their genre all too well. You can get all the info you need from Crude Bastard right here:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Crude-bastard/175213839184244

VICIOUS VISION

These guys are also international artists – from Casa Blanca. Another hardcore metal band that a debuting on my show this week, these guys have a lot of energy and are very impressive musicians. Musically you could be back in the best part of the 90s with this music, but they’ve breathed some modern life into the genre. Find our all you need from Vicious Vision right here:

http://www.myspace.com/viciousvision

http://www.reverbnation.com/vcsvsn

AEWON

This is the Hip Hop segment of my show, a rarely ventured route I must admist but one that I’m going to explore more often now, and ushering in this new path is Hip Hop artist Aewon. Aewon is in his element, giving us all a picture into his world and having fun with us along the way. He’s got a wry, clever approach to his song-writing which gives his music a unique blend of instrumentation and vocals. You can hear more right here:

http://soundcloud.com/aewon

AVA KATY

Ava is a new-comer to writing music, and she’s exploring the world of self-production which is always a great thing to see. She performs everything herself and has created a very honest, elegant sound to her music. She has a lot to offer and I’m sure she’ll be featured on this show in the future.

MIS DIVINE

Most of you should know Mis Divine by now. If not, you’re in for a treat. Mis Divine is fast becoming the most-played new artist on Close to Nowhere, with good reason. Her music is just fantastic. She has a very diverse range in her writing style and her voice is such that it can tackle any musical genre and just fit right in. She’s set herself a challenge – 400 days of “A song a day” which involves an original tune written, performed, recorded, mixed, mastered and released (alot of them with video footage of her performing it). Needless to say Close to Nowhere is going to be there all the way through to see how it goes. Such a rare artist and such a pleasure to have on the show. Please do check it out:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Misdivine-Music-Challenge/218514631549785

MONKS OF MELLONWAH

These guys are sooo good! A very engaging sound, and a real atmospheric presence to their production. Very enjoyable music and these guys just deliver it so well. Very impressed, go check out more:

Well get ready for a massive show! Since I left you last week, at my 50th show, over 30 new artists have been in touch with me! That is something of a record for this show, and I’m hoping a sign of things to come. For those of you outside of Australia (although I’m sure this happens everywhere) there’s a worrying trend in radio stations that doesn’t want to change – the same bands chosen by the same presenters year in, year out. No matter how deserving an artist is of airplay, the spot will always be given to the band that has either already had some success, or knows the presenter personally. Not exactly an objective stance on choosing what your listeners get to hear.

Which is why I am so thrilled to be able to bring some airplay to artists I’ve never personally met, but who would love to bring their music to the attention of some eager new listeners. I only have one criteria when deciding who gets aired on my show – the artist must be unsigned and independent. That’s it. I don’t need to have heard of them before, I don’t need to have met them, all I need is to see how passionate they are about their music and give them the airplay they deserve. So this show is dedicated to the artists who are too often over-looked and undeservingly left to the side. So get ready for a truly eclectic mix of talent in today’s show!

Here we go:

SHIMMERGLOOM

Shimmergloom are a fantastic Indie outfit from Perth, Western Australia. When I first heard their music I was both impressed and annoyed. Impressed by the fact that they really have something special going on with their sound, a great dynamic feel to their music which is really catchy, with excellent harmonies as well making it a very cool experience. But also annoyed because I live in Perth and I’d never heard of this band before, which goes to show how difficult it is to get yourself out there and bring some attention to what you’re doing. Well not for much longer, I’m going to make it my mission to spread this band’s music as far as it can go, starting with right here on Close to Nowhere. The band recently released their EP “Unfamiliar Nights” which is available on iTunes, and you can find out more about the guys through the following links:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shimmergloom/107831315926481

http://www.reverbnation.com/shimmergloom

RELAYED

On this show I debut this talented new artist as “Jiyah Nicholson”, but his stage name is Relayed. He’s an electronic artist with a really interesting production style. I love the flow of this song, and the effort he’s put into letting the piece grow from an almost quiet place to a frantic and exciting climax – very well produced song from an artist who has found a fantastic style to flex his creative muscles in. I don’t normally get instrumental artists on my show so it’s a pleasure to bring some airplay to such a deserving artist. You can hear more from Relayed right here:

www.soundcloud.com/relayed

PAUL HOGAN

Paul is a fantastic new singer-songwriter from Australia who has dived into the world of entertainment head first. A musician, an actor, an impressionist, Paul has done a lot in this industry and is being featured here in this episode with his song “Christmas Guy” which is a very sweet, piano driven ballad. There is alot to enjoy about this song but mostly the fact that it comes from a very honest and personal space – at least it certainly feels that way. Paul is a master of capturing moments and expressing them effortlessly for his listener to not only hear, but feel. You can learn more about Paul right here:

ESSI SIX

Essi came to me last week, and when I heard his stuff I was more then happy to have him featured on my show. Essi has the right attitude and outlook for his music that is missing in a lot of artists these days. He has an honesty and focus that has led his music to where it is today.

“I play guitar, and making music is everything to me. I sing and scream, I drum, I play piano occasionally, I write new songs whenever I can, using whatever I can to make the song that is best for me.” Essi Six

MAX JAHUFER

Max is a fantastic new artist already starting to make waves in the music scene. As an emergin artsts she’s caught the attention of many people and will even be featured in a television series that looks into the lives of emerging artists in Australia (It airs on the 31st of December on Channel 31). Max has a very strong voice, and her writing abilities are very highly tuned to her style of music. You can read a full write up of Max right here:

JKEL

JKel is another instrumental artist who features on this week’s show. Again, fantastic vibe from this genre of writing, and JKel is someone who’s got it down to a tee. This song “Vitality” is something special, very energetic and lively production. I think this will be an artist I’ll be playing alot of in the future. You can check out more of JKel’s songs on youtube just by typing in his name “JKel”. Here’s one of them:

PETE COLLINS

With over eighty songs written from rock , funk , punk , reggae and folk, Pete Collins has quite a reputation for fitting in anywhere. An attitude of rebellion with a touch of ‘anti-politics’ is commonly sensed in his charismatic atmosphere on and of the stage.

RAUOL McLAY

Rauol is a very interesting song-writer. He’s got a great vibe with his instrumentation and a quirky touch to his overall sound, giving his music a real freshness and wry sense of humour. You can check out more right here:

THE SKYROCKETS

“The Sky Rockats have been howling away in Victoria’s great south west since way back in early 2005. Ex-Slap’n'the Cats members Slim & Billy had the need to play all the great rockabilly hits and their own original material once again after an extended break, so with Robin “Slap” Sharrock unavailable at the time, & after an exhaustive search, they stumbled upon ex Hog Stompin’ Zydegator Tim Conlan, ready, willing & able to jump into the back seat & take on slappin’ bass duties. Thus, The Sky Rockats was born!”

THE DRIVE

These guys are fantastic! A really energetic sound and great driving rhythm through this song, and indeed all their songs. They are a fast paced rock band with a lot going for them, I dare say they’ll be featured on this show again. Rather then rant on about them, check out their page:

TONY STEELE

Tony Steele is another great artist from right here in Australia. He has a very honest, engaging sound that translates well in his style of music. I think there’s something very unique about his delivery, and I dare say he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve that he’s yet to reveal! Here are some links to the world of Tony Steele:

RAGING BULL

Strap yourselves in… this one’s an awesome ride! These guys suck you in from bar one, and don’t let up until the very end, just the sort of band I like on my show!

“The best way to describe Raging Bull is that they are a four-piece heavy rock band from Victoria who pride themselves on their live performances. Raging Bull is known for their passionate vocals, provocative lyrics and tight, intertwining rhythmic music & melodies.”

Here’s some details for getting more out of your Raging Bull ecperience:

CORINNE McKNIGHT

14 year old song-writer Corinne McKnight has a wonderful career ahead of her here in Australia, and indeed abroad since her sound would go down fantastically well in the U.S. I’m glad I got the chance to hear her music early on so one day I can say “I played her music way back!” She has an album coming out in January so keep an eye out for it. <itunes:summary>Well get ready for a massive show! Since I left you last week, at my 50th show, over 30 new artists have been in touch with me! That is something of a record for this show, and I'm hoping a sign of things to come. For those of you outside of Australia (although I'm sure this happens everywhere) there's a worrying trend in radio stations that doesn't want to change - the same bands chosen by the same presenters year in, year out. No matter how deserving an artist is of airplay, the spot will always be given to the band that has either already had some success, or knows the presenter personally. Not exactly an objective stance on choosing what your listeners get to hear.

Which is why I am so thrilled to be able to bring some airplay to artists I've never personally met, but who would love to bring their music to the attention of some eager new listeners. I only have one criteria when deciding who gets aired on my show - the artist must be unsigned and independent. That's it. I don't need to have heard of them before, I don't need to have met them, all I need is to see how passionate they are about their music and give them the airplay they deserve. So this show is dedicated to the artists who are too often over-looked and undeservingly left to the side. So get ready for a truly eclectic mix of talent in today's show!

But also annoyed because I live in Perth and I'd never heard of this band before, which goes to show how difficult it is to get yourself out there and bring some attention to what you're doing. Well not for much longer, I'm going to make it my mission to spread this band's music as far as it can go, starting with right here on Close to Nowhere. The band recently released their EP "Unfamiliar Nights" which is available on iTunes, and you can find out more about the guys through the following links:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shimmergloom/107831315926481

http://www.reverbnation.com/shimmergloom

RELAYED

On this show I debut this talented new artist as "Jiyah Nicholson", but his stage name is Relayed. He's an electronic artist with a really interesting production style. I love the flow of this song, and the effort he's put into letting the piece grow from an almost quiet place to a frantic and exciting climax - very well produced song from an artist who has found a fantastic style to flex his creative muscles in. I don't normally get instrumental artists on my show so it's a pleasure to bring some airplay to such a deserving artist. You can hear more from Relayed right here:

www.soundcloud.com/relayed

PAUL HOGAN

Paul is a fantastic new singer-songwriter from Australia who has dived into the world of entertainment head first. A musician, an actor, an impressionist, Paul has done a lot in this industry and is being featured here in this episode with his song "Christmas Guy" which is a very sweet, piano driven ballad. There is alot to enjoy about this song but mostly the fact that it comes from a very honest and personal space - at least it certainly feels that way. Paul is a master of capturing moments and expressing them effortlessly for his listener to not only hear, but feel. You can learn more about Paul right here:

Essi came to me last week, and when I heard his stuff I was more then happy to have him featured on my show. Essi has the right attitude and outlook for his music that is missing in a lot of artists these days.</itunes:summary>

PETER CARR

Pete’s got a great sound. He brings together some fantastic ideas and turns them into a really catchy tune. I’m looking forward to hearing more from him, and that means YOU will too! Here are some links to Pete’s world of music:

DC CARDWELL

There’s alot to enjoy about DC’s work, but what impresses me the most is that he’s one of those musicians that just does it all in regards to his music. I’m talking writing, recording, mixing, EVERYTHING! He’s got a fantastic groove to his style and I’m really enjoying what’s coming from this artist. Here’s some links to the world of DC Cardwell:

DANIEL BEACH

Daniel is a great artist who I came across from a competition that he and I were in called Catapult. He made the Top 50 out of 3,000 entries and he found a post I’d left. From that, he ended up on rotation right here at Close to Nowhere!

JON GOMM

Sometimes you come across something you’ve never seen before, and it’s exciting. I’ve never seen anything like Jon Gomm before, and it’s exciting to say the least! What he’s acheived as a musician is so unique it’s hard to explain. So watch this:

STU LARSEN

Stu is a true talent. He’s developed a style that seems to be made for him, not the other way around. He has a confidence about his performance and doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to achieve it. He’s been travelling around performing and writing (a life style I envy to no end!) and the song I feature on this episode is a great example of what he has to offer.

First, from Brisbane: MisDivine – the 400 day song challenge!

Click here to view the embedded video.

MisDivine is an emerging artist with an incredibly large body of work. She has enough material for 35 albums and has one of the most unique, engaging voices I’ve heard in a long time. She has set herself a task of writing, performing, producing and releasing a song each day for 400 days. 400 DAYS! Just amazing. I feature two of her songs in this episode, and will be featuring more in the near future. Here are all the important links to MisDivine’s pages:

Next up, from Scotland…

THE DEADLY WINTERS – This is a band I want to hear more from. Some artists come my way and I just think F$%#! this is amazing! They just seem to own the space they fill. Every song has something unique about it, no matter what style it’s in, just jumps out to you as being something special. Their new single “The Deadly Winter” is a true testament to this claim (Just incase you need a case and point) Here’s a little promo for the lads:

The Deadly Winters released their debut album in April 2011 and tracks received play on BBC Radio 1’s Introducing in Scotland, Jim Gellatly’s Weekly Podcast, Amazing Radio, Get Ready To Rock Radio, Gill Mills New Music Matters and numerous internet stations and Podcasts. With their new single “The Deadly Winter” officially being released on December the 5th, you’ll be able to get a sneak peak at it on Recharge Radio’s “Close to Nowhere” show every thursday night from 7pm. “This is one track that will be on regular rotation.”

These guys call Perth, Western Australia home. (Currently in the USA, but on their way back soon) And as I say in the show, one word can describe this band – ENERGY. They deliver such a strong, tight sound. The song featured is a very good example of the band’s abilities not only as performers but as song-writers. Such a great feel and presence. Here’s some links to their pages:
