Close to Nowhere: Episode Two – Featuring Helen Shanahan

The first episode is finally behind me!  I must say it was such a hard slog to get Episode One complete – not because it wasn’t fun, just because I’ve never done this before!  But I’m starting to find a steady groove and I think the rest of the Close to Nowhere episodes will be a lot easier to churn out now that I’ve found my structure.

Before I get onto the details of Episode Two, I’d like to give a huge thank you to all the listeners out there that took the time to check out Episode One.  This is such a thrill for me to do, and I’m so humbled by the fact that you all took an hour out of your day to listen to me rant on for an hour – thank goodness the music is good otherwise I’d be in some serious trouble.

A big thank you to Recharged Radio for giving this show some airtime, you guys is alright!

GIRL IN LOVE

For this episode I have decided to do a feature EP and run it throughout the show.  The artist I have featured is a local Perth artist you may recognize from the Scudley Session interview #2 – Helen Shanahan.

-HELEN Shanahan is a somewhat reluctant and accidental star in the making.

She never meant to perform the songs she’d written. They were personal and private reflections – written only because they naturally flowed from heart-to lyric-to guitar.

“I never really thought I’d play my songs to anyone – I would just hide in my room and play. My friends encouraged me to play for them and then when I started performing I just loved it,” Helen said.

Her debut EP is GIRL IN LOVE.  It’s a beautifully crafted work, and captures Helen’s unique style perfectly.  The entire EP is played in this episode of Close to Nowhere, as well as two live recordings and an interview with Helen.

SEGMENTS

This week we have a winner for the YouTrivia challenge!  Jen Thorpe of California was the first one through with the correct answers to last week’s questions, so well done Jen!

However, NO ONE managed to get both songs in the Madman’s Mandolin Medley.  Almost everyone knew the second song which was U2’s With or without you, but the first song stumped you all!  It was actually the Cat Stevens song Father and SonSo as a result, I’ve chosen this week’s two songs, and they’re classics, so good luck in figuring them out!

  1. Thanks for mentioning me here, on the blog, and also for mentioning me in this episode. The YouTrivia is fun! I’m going to give the questions in this episode a try, even though I’m listening to this podcast a bit late.

I’m having a great time trying to play all the little games you have created for your podcast! :D

I really enjoyed the song “Beautiful Disease”. Very nice interview with Helen Shanahan.
The song “Ashburton Terrace” is just heartbreakingly beautiful, and sad, and wonderful.

I love the little chicken sounds from when your chickens play music! This is my favorite part of the show. Chickens are such interesting little creatures.
